The ROI of Wellness Coaching

Jun 02, 2023

Coaching is getting more and more popular in the workplace and has been shown to provide a great return on investment.

According to this survey of Fortune 100 executives conducted by the Manchester Consulting Group,

"coaching resulted in a return on investment (ROI) of almost six times the program cost as well as a 77% improvement in relationships, 67% improvement in teamwork, 61% improvement in job satisfaction and 48% improvement in quality.” (source)

The demand is rising with the understanding that coaching is not just for executives and that it positively influences organizational success (source). The most recent Global-Watch international trends report on workplace mental health and well-being also highlights the rise of mass coaching and the expansion and personalization of support.

The greatest business leaders and professionals have coaches supporting them.

But coaching is not just for top performers nor for low performers in need of help. It is for everyone looking to improve, grow, get unstuck, and expand their performance, well-being and possibilities.

But what is coaching? What about wellness coaching?

Wellness coaching is coaching for performance

The International Coaching Federation defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.

Wellness coaching helps you identify and install meaningful and lasting healthy lifestyle habits supporting work-life balance, stress management, resilience, mental and physical health and much more.

Holistic Wellness Coaches are professionals who take an integrative approach, accounting for more than just nutrition, fitness or simple habit changes, but all aspects of a person’s health and life in a true holistic fashion.

Holistic wellness includes one’s relationship to work and career and the impact of one’s physical and mental health on work performance.

A holistic wellness coach can help anybody wanting to remove blockages in achieving their goals, increasing their energy and sense of well-being, avoiding and recovering from chronic illnesses, depression and burnout.

As per a WebMD's study:

"with proven risk reduction and cost savings, wellness coaching has emerged as one of the leading wellness solutions available today. Wellness coaching offers a true population management solution that engages a broad number of employees, motivates them to make long-term behavioural changes, and contributes to a stronger employer-employee partnership."

Work influences our wellbeing

Work plays a big role in our lives. Or at least, take up a lot of our waking time and energy.

Our relationship to our work, colleagues, managers and workplace largely influence our overall wellbeing. And our wellbeing also influences our performance at work.

By facilitating access to wellness coaching, organizations can improve both employees' wellbeing and performance.

That does not have to be a huge investment. Not everyone would need wellness coaching or would need it all the time.

Wellness Coaching is for those who:

  • are ready for real changes in their lifestyle habits
  • have tried other approaches on their own and have not seen the results they wanted
  • feel stuck and cannot see clearly how to move forward without feeling overwhelmed
  • want to address their challenges from a holistic perspective, integrating mind, heart, and body.
  • are ready to invest in themself to create new opportunities
  • desire to make lasting changes, not try another quick fix

Wellness coaching in organizations

In organizations, small-group coaching works well for individuals ready to make a change and needing guidance and accountability support to improve their habits.

Employees who have higher health risk factors may benefit more from one-on-one coaching. The coaching relationship empowers individuals to find the courage to get started and overcome the sense of overwhelm, get unstuck, go pass doubts and fears, and create permanent changes that possibly were difficult to do on their own.

For leaders, wellness coaching is having the support of a trusted wellness and performance partner in taking the leadership of their health and well-being. A coach creates space for leaders to slow down, introspect and identify creative solutions to their challenges.

When you work with a dedicated coach (or coaches) for your leaders and employees, they become familiar with your organizational challenges and your wellness program. Your “in-house” wellness coach can guide employees towards appropriate resources and offer advice on how to improve your wellness program and organizational practices based on common issues and needs they witness. A dedicated coach can also be involved in your corporate events to add a wellness touch to them.

Considering the benefits of wellness coaching on employees' wellbeing and performance and the ROI for the organization, why not give it a try?
